Trump’s ‘Board of Peace’ unveiled at Davos, but key allies hold back

President Donald Trump used the World Economic Forum in Davos to inaugurate what he called a “Board of Peace,” an initiative pitched as a way to maintain the ceasefire in Israel’s war with Hamas and to coordinate next steps for Gaza’s governance and rebuilding.

The concept, originally framed as a small leadership group with Trump as chairman, was described as expanding into a more ambitious structure. Trump suggested the board could eventually function alongside, or even rival, parts of the United Nations system.

But participation appeared limited compared with the rhetoric. While Trump argued that many countries wanted to be part of the effort, several U.S. allies signaled they would not join, citing concerns about legitimacy, mandate overlap with the U.N., and the politics of who might be invited.

The Davos rollout came during a week when Trump’s foreign-policy agenda was already drawing intense attention. The peace-board proposal was discussed amid broader diplomatic maneuvering and a swirl of related issues at the forum, including Ukraine and transatlantic tensions.

According to the reporting, the board’s origins trace to Trump’s earlier Gaza ceasefire plan, and the idea had also been referenced in international discussions connected to a U.N. Security Council framework. Even with that backdrop, the board’s practical authority and membership remained unclear in the immediate aftermath of the announcement.

Trump framed the project as a path toward stabilizing Gaza and delivering a political roadmap after a devastating conflict. Critics and non-participants, however, questioned whether the new structure would add clarity—or inject competing leadership—into an already crowded diplomatic landscape.
